About the event
SARTOPO SAR Mapping (CALTOPO)
SARTOPO SAR Mapping (also known as CALTOPO), is an 8-hour hands-on course designed for the beginner to have immediate knowledge, skills, and confidence to create and maintain a SAR map for a single operational period missing person's search. The course will require a laptop and a cell phone both with internet capability. Participants will need to create a personal (free) SARTOPO account prior to attending. A portion of the class will be outdoors in order to experience the ability to navigate to points, cover a search area, and allow the search base to monitor your search in "real time." Upon completion, the participants should be able to create a SAR map from scratch, apply Lost Person Behavior statistics, create search areas, understand map layers, and much more. This is not an advanced class but one to give a realistic view of the capabilities of SARTOPO for the SAR manager, Operations and Plans Sections. The instructor is Jeff Wadley with the Backcountry Unit Search and Rescue Team (BUSAR) in the Smokies who has also taught dozens of Lost Person Behavior, missing aircraft, and tracking courses.
