About The Event
Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue
This 8-hour class is designed to give the first responder an overview of large animal rescue and the unique incidents that we as first responders are charged with mitigating. This class will consist of a 4-hour classroom presentation and 4 hours of hands-on training in moving the large animal. In the class we will provide the student with basic knowledge of the incident command system as it applies to large animal rescue, technical rescue equipment needed, PPE for the first responder, behavior of the pray animal, anatomy of the horse, trailer and road incidents, animal containment and immobilization and moving of the animal.
Instructed by Bart E. Powell, Paramedic who also serves as the Director of Public Safety, EMS/EM for Anderson County KY. Instructor Powell is also a technical rescue instructor with the KY Fire Commission and is a retired Special Operations Battalion Chief with the City of Lexington, KY Division of Fire and Emergency Services.
Director Powell has 45 years in emergency services serving with Lexington Fire and currently with the Department of Public Safety in Anderson County KY. Director Powell served as a firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, and Battalion Chief. He has been involved with technical rescue, hazardous materials, and Paramedicine his entire career. He spent five years assigned to the fire academy as an academy instructor. Powell has taught for the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Emergency Management and State Fire Rescue. Powell has been a paramedic for forty years, is a Technical Rescue-Instructor, Haz Mat specialist, Active shooter instructor, TIMs instructor, ACLS, PALS, and ITLS instructor. He is also certified rescue diver. Being in the “Horse Capital of the World”, he has been involved with large animal rescue for over twenty years and established the first large animal rescue team in KY and has trained first responders from all over the world. In those twenty plus years as a Large Animal Rescue Instructor, he has strived to ensure that all first responders have access to this specialized training. This is about rescuing the animal, however, the most important aspect of this training is rescuing the involved citizen and ensuring first responder safety.

Required PPE: clothing and footwear for outdoor activities, safety glasses, leather gloves, and technical rescue helmet.
